In October 2016, the southwestern region of Haiti was affected by Hurricane Matthew, which hit the country with winds at 250 km / h and very intense rainfall.
The damage caused by the hurricane was estimated at approximately $ 115 million, and affected the road network in particular, which prevents the population from accessing basic services, such as hospitals and schools, and also prevents institutions to carry humanitarian aid to reduce the difficulties of the population.
For this purpose, the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Communication (MTPTC) proposes to use part of the funds donated by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for urgent interventions of road rehabilitation.
The project concerns 21 main intervention points, 10 for lot 2 and 11 for lot 3. For each point the following studies have been carried out:
- Topographic study and surveys;
- Geotechnical study;
- Hydrologic and hydraulic study ;
- Reinforced concrete, masonry and gabion structures study ;
- Environmental impact study and resettlement action plan (RAP) ;
- Detailed Engineering Design and Tender documents;
The design of the structures was approached from a technical and economic point of view taking into account the appropriate and optimal factors of costs and performances. The summary of the different types of work has been defined below:
- 19 km or rehabilitation of unpaved roads ;
- 2 km of concrete pavement ;
- 800 m of bank repair ;
- 1 200 m of coastal erosion protection ;
- 300 m of reinforced concrete wall ;
- 33 concrete pipe culverts for a total length of 350 m ;
- 40 reinforced concrete box culverts, simple or multiple frame, with variable section of 2.00x1.50 to 4.00x3.00 m;
- 130 000 m3 of earthworks, of which 50 000 of cut and 80 000 of embankment ;
- 17 000 m3 of gabions ;
- 6 000 m3 of rockfill ;
- 4 100 m3 of Cyclopean concrete ;
- 8 000 m3 of stone masonry.
