Project Description

The project concerns the construction of the Bobo Dioulasso – Ivory Coast border motorway (approximately 200 km), last section to be studied of the Ouaga – Yamoussoukro – Abidjan axis. The study also includes 2 connecting junctions to the towns of Banfora and Nangoloko. The design of the study follows the same criteria as the previous section, Ouaga - Bobo: it is a closed motorway, with interchanges and toll station, which will be managed in concession. Existing transport networks will be maintained through overpasses, underpasses, pedestrian footwells, etc.

General objective

The overall objective of the program is the improvement of the transport sector, a strategic sector for the economic and social development of the country. The actions of this sector were elaborated in the plan of investments and priority actions until the year 2025, the Strategy of Development of the Transport Sector in Burkina Faso of axis O.

The restoration of transport infrastructure to improve transport costs, stimulate economic exchanges, access to markets and social and administrative services, is part of the Sahel security and development strategy.

Specific objective

The axis Abidjan - Yamoussoukro - Bouaké - Ferké - Banfora - Bobo-Dioulasso - Ouagadougou represents not only one of the main roads of the Ivory Coast, connecting the South to the North, but also within the framework of economic exchanges, constitutes the main artery both nationally and in terms of international transit, because it plays a very important role in trade between the countries of the hinterland, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and the coast with the port of Abidjan.

The specific objective of the Bobo-Dioulasso-Ivory Coast border project complements the Yamoussoukro-Ouagadougou motorway project in Burkina Faso. This project will have a direct impact on the economy and the social situation of all countries directly concerned by the connection with the port of Abidjan, thanks to the reduction of transport time, wearing of transport means, cost reduction and qualitative increase in service levels and road safety.

The geometric design of the study also includes a road safety assessment that has made it possible to implement all measures to ensure the safety of users.

Road project geometry:

  • Total road length: 200 km
  • 2 separated carriageways of 7.00m in width each, with 2 lanes of 3.50m for each carriageway;
  • Median of 13.00m in width ;
  • Dividing strip of 11.00m in width ;
  • Flush left lane (B.D.G.) of 1.00m ;
  • Emergency stopping lane (B.A.U.) of 2.50m in width.

Services Description

The study is divided into three phases :

  • First phase : preliminary layout reconnaissance study
  • Second phase : environmental and social impact studies, resettlement action plan (RAP), socio-economic feasibility study, concession grant study, preliminary design.
  • Third phase : final design and preparation of bidding documents.
