Project Description

Kayonza-Rusumo road is part of international road network of Rwanda which links the country to the Tanzanian port of Dar Es Salaam (Rusumo border post).

The project for the rehabilitation and widening of Kayonza-Rusumo road will support the regional integration and cross border trade with Tanzania at Rusumo, following the creation of Rusumo One Stop Border Post (OSBP) active since January 2015. One single stop has been created where authorities of both countries works together for immigration controls, fastening the transit of people and goods and shortening waiting time for controls and passport procedures.

The project road serves the highly fertile areas of Kirehe, Ngoma and Kayonza districts. At regional level, the Kayonza-Rusumo road is on Central Corridor, supporting the regional integration objective of partner states of EAC and Great Lakes region, especially Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Burundi by connecting to the border post of Rusumo.

Located in the south East of Rwanda, Kayonza-Rusumo road (92 km) was paved in 1978, and crosses 3 district: Kayonza, Ngoma and Kirehe. It was rehabilitated in early 1990s.

The road alignment varies between low, medium and very sinuous. The design speed is variable from 40 to 80 km/h.
