Nekempte town is located in the Oromia regional state, at 280 km from Addis Ababa, along the national trunk road n°5 currently under upgrading. The project road starts in Nekempte town (northern outskirts) and reaches Bure town after roughly 258,1 kms heading north/north-east direction crossing the Blu Nile river after roughly 190 kms from Nekempt. The end of project is after Bure town center at the junction with the national road Addis-Debra Marcos-Bahar Dar road. The road is classified as Link road B32, and its current status is “gravel/earth” road with variable width between 4 and 7 metres.

The project concerns the upgrading from gravel to asphalt (DS4 standard) of the 250 kms from Nekemte to Bure. Most of the project’s road crosses flat to rolling terrain a part from two mountainous-escarpment sections between 80 and 90 and 180 to 195, the latter being the Blue Nile (Abbay river) gorge crossing.
