Project Description

Rehabilitation of the national road RN1 between Mbirkelane and Tambacounda over a total length of 237 km.

The works are divided into two sections: Mbirkelane-Koungheul, of a total length of 110 km, and Koungheul-Tambacounda of a total length of approximately 127 km. The works mainly consist in the strengthening of the existing road by milling and recycling the existing pavement, construction of a new base layer in laterite improved with cement and implementation of a new asphalt concrete coating with a thickness of 5 cm (approximately 205.000 tons). The works aim at improving the drainage system by demolition of most ancient and smallest structures.

The contract concerning the realisation of two lots in includes a base period and an option period. The base period is financed by the 9th EDF and the option period by the Senegalese government.

The asphalted section of the Mbirkelane-Tambacounda road is characterized by a cross section of 9/10m with 7 meters of asphalted road (asphalt concrete of 4cm, 159.000 tons of surface treatment) and non asphalted side shoulders with variable width between 1,5 and 2m.

The roads runs through generally flat lands with rare sections in cuttings. Generally the road is monotone, long and straight ways interrupted by wide radius curves. Some of them could need a check during the progress of the project for what concerns the project speed (100 km/h).
