Project Description

The Tshikapa – Kananga – Mbuji Mayi road is an earth road which becomes almost impracticable in rainy season. In particular, the section between Tshikapa and Kananga is frequently interrupted by erosion phenomena used only by pedestrians,. Only motor vehicles and motorcycles can always use this stretch, while light vehicles circulate with great difficulty and take up to a week to reach Kananga.

The main objective of this project is to promote sector politics development as envisaged in the document of Emergency Multisectorial Program of Rehabilitation and Reconstruction and in the Emergency Program of Support to Life Style Improvement (Programme Multisectoriel d’Urgence de Réhabilitation et de Reconstruction, et Programme d’Urgence d’Appui à l’Amélioration des Conditions de Vie).

The road will be a bitumen surfaced road, 10 m wide with 2 lanes of 3.5 m surfaced by 5 cm of asphalt concrete and 2 shoulder 1,5.0 m wide surfaced by a single surfaced treatment. The base layer, 0.2 m thick, is in crushed stone while the subbase (thickness varies from 0.2 to 0.25 m) is in a selected natural material (sandy material).

In town crossing the road width is increased up to 12 m (shoulder width increases from 1.5 to 2.5 m).

Roadworks include the construction of T-Junction, roundabout and parking area.

The Mbuji Mayi crossing includes a 1.5 km stretch of double carriageway, and more than 8 000 m of footpaths.

The erosion control and detailed investigation to manage water runoff are critical aspects carefully studied.

The following bridges (steel – concrete) are part of the design:

Kaluebo bridge (35m) at Ch. 106+173, Mwanza Ngoma bridge (35m) at Ch 265+464, Miawo bridge (62m) at Ch 199+842, Lukula bridge at (35m) at Ch 347+750, Lubi bridge (35m) at Ch 359+749, and Lulua bridge (160m) at Ch 214+020.

Services Description

Phase 1:

-  Technical-economic feasibility study for identifying the optimal solution from an economic and environmental point of view for the rehabilitation of the Tshikapa-Mbuji Mayi section of the RN1. Such analysis is based on security indicators, technical aspects (layout geometry, geotechnics, hydraulics), traffic analysis, economic and financial analysis, users advantages, works cost estimate.

Phase 2

- Detailed engineering design of works concerning the chosen rehabilitation option, project main impact study on the environment with the aid of an environmental and social impact study, problem analysis, institutional aspects, social and environmental management, technical aspects (topography, geotechnical study, geophysical study, hydraulic study), traffic analysis, economic and financial analysis, environmental impact study, managerial measures. Resettlement Action Plan. Preparation of Tender documents for works and tender documents for works control and supervision.
