Project Description

Consultancy service contract’s main objective was undertaking the feasibility study, the preliminary design, the detailed design and prepare bidding document for the upgrading to paved standards of three roads, namely: Road1. Hamurwa – Kerere - Kanungu (47 km), Road2. Kanyantorogo – Butogota - Buhoma (32 km) and Road3. Butogota – Hamayanja – Ifasha - Ikumba (64 km).

The selected design standards were ClassII paved for Road 1 & 2 and the C gravel for Road3. The assumed typical x-section is: carriageway width of 10 and11 meters for Road1 and 2 respectively, and 5 and 7metres, inside and outside the Bwindi impenetrable forest respectively, for Road3. However, urban crossing sections have a wider roadway of 14 and 15 mts, respectively for Road1 and 2, as 2mts walkways are added on either side.

Natural gravel materials lab test results showed CBR deficiency to comply with subbase quality requirements, for which blending with crushed stone material and cement stabilization was considered. Eventually a 30% addition of crushed stone material was found to be adequate to correct the gap in CBR of the natural gravel material to be used as subbase. The proposed pavement structures for Road1 and road2 is made of 300mm subbase (natural lateritic gravel + 30% CSB) + 200mm crushed stone base +50mm AC, while a lighter pavement structure made of, 250mm subbase (natural lateritic gravel + 30% CSB) + 150mm crushed stone base +SD wearing course, is proposed for the Butogota-Ikumba road3.

The design also includes the reconstruction of three bridges namely, the Ishasha and the Munyaga both along the Kanyantororgo-Buhoma road2 and the Hihizo bridge along the Butogota Ikumba road. The proposed structures are made of reinforced concrete, simply supported single 21mts long span, while deck is 15 mts wide and includes 2 mts footway on either side. The Hihizo bridge, instead, is designed as a 2 x 21 mts span simply supported reinforced concrete and its deck is 10 mts wide, as no foot walks are considered.

Services Description

The Consultancy services’ main objectives are: undertaking a feasibility study, preliminary design and detailed design including bidding document preparation of Hamurwa-Kerere-KanunguKanyantorogo-Butogota-Buhoma /Hamayanja-lfasha-lkumba road upgrading to paved standards. Two road safety audit reports were produced on the preliminary design and final engineering design.
